Supplements are to be used as an aid to your goals whether it be weight loss or muscle building. I get discount bodybuilding supplements from www.topshapesupplements.com. I agree, the aegg, some supplements do absolutely nothing and are a waste of money. Personally, I take creatine, glutamine, protein, and a multi vitamin to help with recovery. Steve Reeves may look great, but he doesn't compare to the hard working bodybuilders of today who take a ton of supplements.

Cabbage - the point of the article wasnt really to say that supplements are ineffective. I really believe that certain ones are, and when used correctly can enhance preformance and results. You are right in supposing that there is research to confirm this. I guess the point I was trying to make is that I think there is a dangerously stupid tendency of beginners to obsess over supplement regimens when they are missing the major component - lifting weights until it hurts a lot. I think people forget what the definition of "supplement" is, and what it is they are supposed to "supplementing," to be honest.

I wrote a more personal post as sort of a corollary to this article on the forums:

Interesting read. I'm wondering, though, if there have been any studies done as far as comparing a control group of those not taking supplements to those taking supplements. That might give a little more weight to the argument on either side.

Personally, I don't have an opinion just yet. Perhaps I'll try dropping the whey supplement some time and see if I can still manage to make gains.

PS., Mr. Rippetoe says all you need is GOMAD.
